Don't like their service? They don't want to hear about it. There's no way to talk to a manager, ever. They don't care about your business. Just your money. Signing up has never been easier. Want to change a service, or move a domain? Prepare for the never ending runaround. The only thing their customer support is good for is to refer you to their website and make you furious.
After having my site hosted with them for a little over a year, I had a friend who offered to host a site for me. I cancelled my hosting through their website. Then I got an email implying that it had not been cancelled, so I called them up and went round and round for hours. "They can't cancel it, I have to do it through their website" which wouldn't cancel it. Eventually, they 'cancelled' my hosting. The next month on my credit card statement, I was billed for hosting again. I called them up and they said it had not been cancelled, and they won't refund my money but they would pro-rate a return. I said great, they couldn't cancel it, I had to go through their website... again. So, I cancelled it on their website 'again' and called them up to confirm. It had not been cancelled, so they were finally able to cancel my account on their end. Finally, whew.
Well, they also cancelled my domain name registration, which put it into remission or something, and now I had to pay them $40 to get my domain name out of limbo, when I had originally paid for it for 2 years. They told me it had expired on 9/14/07, when I had a reciept that said it was paid til 9/14/08. Worse, it was 10/16/07 when they told me I had it cancelled over a month ago, but I had been accessing my website the previous week from other systems so I know they had killed my account with my hosting, and their front end techs didn't know what the hell they were talking about.
So, now I have to print out a document, fax it in, mail a $40 check to them, and wait, supposedly. I had asked to speak to anybody that knew anything... a manager, a technician, anything, as I have a hugely technical background. The only thing they would say is "the only way to reach management is through complaints@1and1.com" There was no solution anybody could provide me, until I had called back like an eigth time. I got a hold of a frontliner named Bob.
Bob told me that my domain was about to come out of limbo, and that as long as no one else snatched it up, I could just purchase it again from anybody else.
Not only are these guys the worst customer service on the planet, I truly believe they try to extort as much money as they can from their customers.

Well, I have been very happy with 1and1 as my shared hosting provider. Thier basic services are quite affordable, but I do agree that the customer service is very slow and cumbersome. When trying to cancel a domain, I found the service representative difficult to understand dur to his accent, and I held the line for ages... The price make it up for me though, and they do offer some neat tools. However, most of the free webmaster tools are useless and difficult to use. I recommend them, but only because of the price.

Initially, I had some issues. A partner of mine had a bad experience with tech support. As I learned how to code better my problems vanished. The databases are not going to be adequate for mega-sites but for most independent designers it'll never be a problem. Anybody who thought they were going to get anything more than what 1and1 offers at their ridiculously low prices was dreaming anyway. Don't go budget if your designing huge database driven sites, but that should be obvious. 1and1 is great for smaller projects. I use several different servers for any given project. When I use them, 1and1 keeps the costs down and profits up, bottom line. A great value.
